The University of South Alabama has announced the results of the Student Government Association officer elections for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Colin Al-Greene, 22, of Mobile, will serve as president. He is a senior, majoring in political science in the College of Arts and Sciences, who served as SGA vice president, chief justice, senator and homecoming elections chair for 2009-2010. He is a member of Kappa Sigma, Kappa Nu Chapter, and a Southbound New Student Orientation Leader. Al-Greene is the recipient of the Bay Area Scholarship, and he has been named to “Who’s Who Among American College and University Students.” He was also second runner-up in the Mr. Jaguar competition. He is the son of Kim Al-Greene.

Jessica Byrd, 21, of Hurley, Miss., will serve as vice president. She is a senior majoring in biology and Spanish in the College of Arts and Sciences. She has served as an SGA senator and student affairs chair. She is a member of the Southerners, the official student ambassadors for the University. She is the daughter of Paul and Tracy Byrd.

Nick Lawkis, 25, of Mobile, will serve as treasurer. He is pursuing a master’s in public administration in the College of Arts and Sciences. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Mitchell College of Business. He is the president of Sigma Alpha Pi, a national society of leadership and success. He is also a member of Alphi Chi, Alpha Kappa Psi and the Golden Key Club. Lawkis is the 2009 recipient of the Bill Moss Certified Commercial Investment Member Scholarship and was named Sigma Alpha Pi student president of the month. He is the son of Paul and Paula Bruton.

The purpose of the SGA is to protect and advance student interests as well as to promote the welfare of the student body. The organization operates as a constitutional democracy and is comprised of executive, judicial, and legislative branches.
