Steps in the IRB Review Process

  1. Prepare IRB application and supplemental materials.  See IRB Submission Guidance Chart for required documentation.
  2. Submit application materials via IRBNet
  3. IRB assigns a number and initiates preliminary screening
  4. If the submission is not adequate, will be returned for completion
  5. IRB Office determines level of review (exempt, expedited, full board)
  6. If full board review, IRB Office adds project to next meeting agenda
      1. Voting
          1.   Approved
          2. Modifications Required
          3. Information Required
          4.  Deferred
          5. Disapproved
  7. If exempt review, IRB staff conducts an administrative review
      1. Makes the determination of exempt status
      2. Project is approved or requires modification
  8. If expedited, IRB assigns IRB Chair/Member to conduct review
      1. Voting
          1. Approved
          2. Modifications Required
          3. Information Required
          4. Deferred
          5. Disapproved
  9. IRB Office ensures all required signatures are obtain
  10. IRB Office ensures all required training is complete
  11. Final letter of approval is granted to Investigator
  12. Project approval notated in IRB Minutes
