The History Department welcomes our new faculty members, Leanne Good and William Pencak, who will be joining the department beginning in August 2013!

Leanne Good

Leanne Good

Leanne Good joins the History Department faculty this year as Assistant Professor of Medieval History. Her research focuses on early medieval political organization in western and central Europe, with an emphasis on the construction of larger-scale cultural and political space. Her current project explores the process by which rulers in the Carolingian era legitimized their authority and unified regions under their control through the delineation of land rights, and through the construction of an imagined landscape of meaningful places. A second research project examines the resources which determined the success or failure of politically elite families in peripheral regions during the period of Carolingian expansion. Professor Good will teach the first half of the Western Civilization survey, Medieval History, and Ancient History.

William Pencak

William Pencak

William Pencak joins the History Department faculty this year as The Bert and Fanny Meisler Visiting Professor of History and Jewish Studies. Professor Pencak is a senior scholar who has taught and written extensively about American Jewish history during a highly successful career at Pennsylvania State University. He has authored nine books, written more than fifty scholarly articles, and edited or co-edited some 25 additional volumes. His highly acclaimed Jews and Gentiles in Early America, 1654-1800 was published by the University of Michigan in 2005. He is currently writing the 'North America' section of the Cambridge History of Judaism and also serving as editor of the journal Pennsylvania History. Professor Pencak will teach courses on U.S. Jewish History as well as Early America.
