After a long delay, The McCall Library is set to re-open in early July 2016. Due to the parking situation on the main campus and limited staff, however, patrons are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with our staff prior to their visit. All visitors to the USA campus must display a parking pass in their vehicles. Appointments are encouraged so that a campus parking pass may be sent to you in advance and so that we may ensure we have the staff on hand to assist you. For assistance or to schedule an appointment, please email mccalllib@southalabama.edu or phone 251-341-3900.

IMPORTANT: While the majority of our manuscript and photograph collections are at least minimally described on our manuscript and photograph indexes (which can be reached by clicking on "Guide to Collections" in the above menu), this Website only provides in-depth information on select collections. We encourage our patrons to call, email, or drop by to inquire about other collections we may have. New material arrives almost daily.
Since its founding in 1978, the mission of The Doy Leale McCall Rare Book and Manuscript Library has been to identify, acquire, appraise, preserve, organize, and describe important historical material relating to the history of the Alabama Black Belt and its families, the history of Mobile and southwest Alabama and its people, and the history of the University of South Alabama, and to make these materials available to scholars; to university students, staff, faculty, and administrators; and to the general public. In addition to the Alabama Black Belt, the focus of our collections is the civil rights, cultural, economic, educational, environmental, legal, literary, military, political, and social history of the region from the early nineteenth century to the present. We also actively collect historic photographs and rare books, and we preserve incunabula and other rare volumes that have been donated to the university.

We invite you to explore our collections, policies, and fees using the menu above.
