Faculty in all units of the University of South Alabama are encouraged to mentor well-qualified high school students.

  • Students who wish to work with faculty in the University of South Alabama System must register with the Office of Undergraduate Research.
  • Well-qualified here designates that, in the judgment of the faculty, the student shows adequate academic preparation and evidence of aptitude in the faculty member’s area of study.
  • These students will enroll in the Advanced Research Experiences Program (AREP).
    • This program will allow students to complete a process of a special, limited application to the University of South Alabama that will grant them access to University of South Alabama JagMail and a student ID card.
    • These students will then be able to register with ScholarBridge, the online research experience matching system, to search for and be matched with a mentor.
    • Links to these systems and portals are made available at the web site of the office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) at www.southalabama.edu/programs/our.
    • Once a faculty member and high school student have been officially matched, the high school student must enroll in a 0 credit hours, no-cost course with the faculty person as the instructor of record.
    • The student must enroll in this special course for any academic term in which they remain engaged in mentored research.
    • This shall allow the faculty member to record their activities through the Official USA Banner system, and for the student to have these experiences recorded in an official transcript.
