Week of Welcome…and Beyond!

 

USA's Week of Welcome is designed to show you all the places you belong at South Alabama. From the moment our new students set foot in Housing at Move-In Day, through their First Night on campus, Convocation, and Get-on-Board Day, we have designed a schedule full of events — both academic and social — to highlight our special campus community.

Our goal is to help you get connected with the people, places, and groups that will make sure your time at South is spectacular. You will have the opportunity to meet students across a wide range of areas, learn about new organizations, and discover opportunities to connect with faculty in learning experiences ranging from the classroom to the Gulf of Mexico.

We're starting your first night at USA right at the Mitchell Center! Come kick off the school year with Free food, giveaways, and lots of USA Spirit. Headlined by our main event Mentalist Craig Karges! Experience the Extraordinary on your first day at USA with award-winning entertainer and mentalist Craig Karges! He combines the art of magic with the science of psychology and the power of intuition to create the impression that nothing is impossible. Tables float, minds are read, metal bends, and your imagination is challenged because you won't believe your eyes! He is the 6 time Entertainer of the Year and was most recently named "Best Campus Act in The Last 25 Years" by Campus Activities Magazine. YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS!

South Alabama Women's Soccer Exhibition Game vs. UAB
Soccer Field ("The Cage" – located on Old Shell Road between Baseball and Softball stadiums)

Cheer on the South Alabama Women's Soccer team as they take on the Blazers of the University of Alabama Birmingham. The Cage is located on Old Shell Rd. between the Baseball and Softball Stadiums. Gates open at 11:30 am and admission is free. Go Jags!

Worldview and Faith Based Organization Open House and Wellness Fair
Looking to join a faith or spiritual organization on campus? Want to start the semester focused on holistic wellness? Join us for the Worldview and Faith-based Organization Open House and Wellness Fair! The program will introduce you to representatives from USA's registered faith-based student organizations and their associated local groups and help you get connected to the vibrant faith community here at South Alabama. Also connect with staff from the Student Health Center, Camus Recreation, and Counseling and Testing to ensure a holistic focus on wellness!

Join SouthFit's BodySculpt class! Get stronger with this class that uses dumbbells, exercise bands and your own body weight. Free refreshments and fitness giveaways!

Rockin' the Rec

Stop, Drop, and Dodge
Indoor Soccer Court, Rec Center
6:00 pm – 7:15 pm
Students will partake in a large dodgeball game on the indoor soccer court. We will pack in as many students as want to play, thereby creating a last person standing concept out of tens to hundreds of players. Balls flying all over the place, bodies being splattered, arguments everywhere... what could be more fun?

Can You Dig It Blind?
Courts 2 and 3, Indoor basketball courts, Rec Center
6:00 pm – 7:15 pm
For this event, we will have two full volleyball nets set up. There will be a tarp placed over the net that will reach the floor causing players to not be able to see what is happening on the other side. Players will have to wait for the ball to come back over the net while being unsure of where it will be. A fun and exciting way to play volleyball.

Café and Karaoke and Trivia on the Deck
Smoothie Bar and Outdoor Patio/Deck, Rec Center
7:15 pm – 8 pm
For this event, the smoothie bar will be open. We will be offering smoothies, beverages and snacks for purchase. Students will have easy access from the smoothie bar out onto the deck to sign up and participate in karaoke singing and trivia. Smart people who can carry a tune wanted. Need only apply.

RHA Backyard Bash
Stokes Hall Classroom

The Residence Hall Association will host a Backyard Bash to welcome all students to Housing and to the University of South Alabama. There will be a host of fun activities, competitive games, and food for new and returning students to enjoy! Come out to not miss out!

Convocation
Put on your best Jag Wear and follow the bells to the academic start of the year at the inaugural Convocation. This signature event welcomes new students and faculty to the University and is a time to welcome back returning students, faculty, staff and administration for Fall semester. This campus-wide gathering offers the opportunity to connect to the academic community at South Alabama. We will celebrate student engagement, recognize accomplishments, and celebrate the beginning of a new academic year.

Convocation day begins for Freshmen with the 2020 Class Picture. Red, white or blue Jag gear, or other red, white, or blue attire is recommended; first-year students are asked to come to the Mitchell by 9:45 a.m. Convocation begins at 11:00 a.m. and will feature a welcome from our President, a student speaker, and words from one of our alumni.

Following Convocation, join the campus community for a casual lunch around the Mitchell Center Concourse. Serving stations will be on both the north and south sides.

College Open Houses
1:00pm-3:00pm
After lunch, new students visit their academic "home" - that is the College or School that houses their major- for Dessert with the Deans. Meet your college leadership and get to know some faculty and students. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and find important offices.

Walk Your Schedule
2:00-4:00 pm
Don't get lost when classes start on Tuesday! With welcome tents out on Monday afternoon, this is a perfect time for new students to walk their class schedule. Take advantage of the time and resources (not to mention free water) to locate classrooms, learn the shortest way from New Hall to the Life Sciences Building, and figure out parking zones.

Marx Library is hosting an Instagram photo booth stocked with fun props and flat librarians--fans with the liaison librarians' headshots. Students will locate their librarian on a poster and snap a pic with that librarian. There will be giveaways including library swag and candy so come and check it out!

This welcome back to school cookout sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs is open to USA students, faculty and staff members. It is a night filled with free food, music and a chance to fellowship with friends.

SouthFit Group Fitness Sampler
Fitness Studios, Rec Center
7:30-8:30pm
Rec Center fitness instructors will hold multiple different fitness classes for an abbreviated amount of time. Try Indoor Cycling, Yoga, Barre Sculpt, Step Aerobics, and more. Students will have the opportunity to walk in and sample different fitness classes the Rec offers and meet some of the instructors. Free refreshments and workout towels!

Come sing your heart out and be the star at Karaoke Night. We'll have your favorite hits from Rock, to R&B, to Country. Our DJ has thousands of songs to choose from for you to sing all night long.

NPHC Fall Informational is an opportunity for USA students to meet the university's divine nine group. This is a mandatory event for all students that are interested in joining a NPHC Greek organization. Students must be dressed in business attire and have their student identification cards. The cost of the event is $5.00.

JP Comedy featuring Jeffrey Jay

Jeffrey Jay is a transgender comedian, comedy writer for the Feast of Fun podcast, and public speaker. He has been featured in The Advocate as one of "The top 7 Transgender Comedians" and "7 LGBT Comics You Shouldn't Have missed in 2011", has been see on the CW morning show The Eye Opener, and a Finalist in The 2013 Funniest Comic in Texas. He has been featured in the Dallas Comedy Festival and in a currently airing national Hyundai Commercial. When not doing stand-up Jeffrey participates in ally training and speaks at colleges and high schools sharing his story to educate others about Trans issues.
