Become a group fitness instructor or personal trainer

 

SouthFit offers a one-semester, non-credit class to prepare you to be a group fitness instructor or personal trainer. Both theoretical knowledge (anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, kinesiology, and more) and practical skills are emphasized.  A certification will be held at the end of the semester at a discounted cost.

 

 

 

 

 

Group Fitness Instructor Prep Course, offered every Fall Semester

 

Cost: $30 for USA affiliates and Recreation Center members, $50 for non-USA.  Payable by cash or check.

 

Date & Times: TBD for Fall 2015

 

Skills Covered: Class components, class design, music, cueing, posture, alignment, safety, exercise modifications, and more.

 

 

Personal Fitness Trainer Prep Course, offered every Spring Semester

 

Cost: $30 for USA affiliates and Recreation Center members, $50 for non-USA. Payable by cash or check.

 

Date & Times: Spring 2015 class will meet on Mondays & Wednesdays, January 26-April 22, 4:00-5:00 PM in the Student Recreation Center meeting room.

 

Skills Covered: Fitness assessments, health screenings, muscular imbalances, session design, posture, alignment, safety, exercise modifications, and more.

 

Registration Information: Just attend the first class meeting.  Attendees will be given a syllabus and a chance to ask questions about becoming a group fitness instructor or personal trainer.  Payment is due at the second class for those who wish to participate in the course.

 

 

Physical Activity as part of your academic classes

 

Professors, would you like to tie in physical fitness to your class objectives? We would like to team up with you! Some of our collaborations include:

 

  • Department of Earth Science’s Geology Field Camp
  • School of Continuing Education and Special Courses’ “Stretch for Success” Learning Community
  • Department of Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Studies’ research studies

Private lectures or fitness classes

 

Our staff is available for private lectures or fitness classes for your university group.  Lectures include risk factors for cardiovascular disease, alcohol & nutrition, basic ChooseMyPlate guidelines, and how to set up an exercise plan.  Fitness classes include all types of classes offered by SouthFit.

 

 

 

 

 

Private lectures/classes can be held at the Student Recreation Center or your campus office.  Please email sarahrentz@southalabama.edu to request a private lecture/class.  The fee is $45/hour and we provide all handouts and/or equipment.

 

 

Student Recreation Center Tours

 

We are happy to give short tours (20-30 minutes) of the Recreation Center to Freshman Experience classes (CAS 100), Concepts of Health & Fitness classes (PE 100), or any other group on campus.  We will also discuss the programs that Campus Recreation offers.  FREE.  Please email sarahrentz@southalabama.edu to set up a time.
