The Supreme Court of Alabama will hold a special session at the Mitchell Center on Thursday, November 6, at 9 a.m.

This marks the second time in USA history that the court has held oral arguments on campus. This unique opportunity offers USA students, faculty and staff a chance to witness the Alabama Supreme Court outside Montgomery's Judicial Building. Dr. John Smykla, chairperson of the political science and criminal justice department, is coordinating the event.

"It's a rare opportunity for students and the entire community to watch the court in action in our own backyard," Dr. Smykla said. "It helps build our trust in government."

The court will hold oral arguments on two cases, including a lawsuit revolving around a cancer policy lawsuit.

As the highest state court, the Alabama Supreme Court has both judicial and administrative responsibilities. The Court reviews decisions rendered by other state courts, and it governs the administration, practice and procedure in all Alabama courts.
