Governor Appoints Alumnus to USA Board

Gov. Bob Riley has appointed University of South Alabama alumnus and Enterprise, Alabama physician Dr. Scott A. Charlton to the USA Board of Trustees.

Charlton will represent Alabama’s Coffee and Crenshaw counties, succeeding the late Jack R. Brunson of Elba, Alabama, who had served continuously as a USA board member from his appointment in 1989 until his death in March 2006.

“Dr. Charlton is a distinguished physician and a graduate of USA's medical school and will bring a wealth of experience and insight to our Board of Trustees,” USA President Gordon Moulton said.

A 1994 graduate of USA’s College of Medicine, Charlton practices at Southeastern ENT, Allergy, and Sinus Center P.C. and serves on staff at Medical Center Enterprise, South Alabama Outpatient Surgery Center, and Dale Medical Center in Ozark, Alabama.

Charlton, who is an otolaryngologist or ear, nose and throat specialist, said the appointment gives him the opportunity to help the institution that has served him so well.

“It’s an incredible honor,” Charlton said. “I want to do this because it allows me to fulfill some of the responsibility I feel in return for the quality education I received in medical school at South Alabama.
I want to give back to the University because of what it has meant to me.”

Charlton, who was born in Lansthul, Germany, and grew up in Tuscaloosa, Ala., graduated with honors from the University of Alabama with a bachelor of science degree in biology.

While in medical school at USA, Charlton served as class president and earned top honors, including the Charles Urschel Award in Physiology and the Hollis Wiseman Award in Pediatrics. He was also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, the President’s Commission on Medical Affairs, and the Admissions Committee.

Following medical school, Charlton completed his residency training at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Hartford. He is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Academy of Otolaryngology Allergy, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

In addition to his membership in these three professional societies, he is also a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the Coffee County Medical Society.

USA’s Board of Trustees has 17 members, including the governor and the state superintendent of education serving as ex-officio members. A regular term on the USA board is 12 years.

Charlton’s appointment will now go before the state Senate for confirmation.
