Carolyn Haines, assistant professor of creative writing in the department of English at the University of South Alabama, was honored in February with the prestigious Richard Wright Literary Excellence Award.
The award, named for the African-American author of such classics as “Native Son” and “The Outsider,” is given each year to an outstanding, living writer and a poet for a body of literary work with a strong Mississippi connection. Also honored this year was Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natasha Trethewey.
Haines is the author of more than 60 books, including the “Bones” mystery series, which is set in the Mississippi Delta. The latest book in the series, “Greedy Bones,” is scheduled for release in July from St. Martin’s Minotaur.
Haines, a native of Lucedale, Miss., received her master’s in creative writing from USA. She received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi. Before teaching, she worked as a journalist and photojournalist for several daily newspapers.
The award was made during the Natchez Literary & Cinema Celebration held in Natchez, Miss. Previous writing recipients of the Richard Wright Literary Award have included Eudora Welty, Margaret Walker Alexander, Ellen Douglas, Willie Morris, Shelby Foote, Richard Ford, Barry Hannah and John Grisham.
