Jeff Johnson, a journalist and social activists who has devoted a great deal of time merging politics and popular culture, will speak at the University of South Alabama Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the USA Mitchell Center. The doors will open at 6 p.m., and admission is free.

Johnson will speak about “Unclaimed Legacy: Who Will Lead the Next Social Movement.” Following the talk, he will sign copies of his new book, “Everything I’m Not Made Me Everything I Am: Discovering Your Personal Best.”

Based out of Washington, D.C., Johnson has established himself as an authentic voice for change as a commentator on Black Entertainment Television. He provides weekly commentaries on the nationally syndicated “Tom Joyner Morning Show.” In addition, he contributes commentary and analysis regularly on MSNBC’s “Dayside” and “Hardball” with Chris Matthews, CNN’s “Headline News,” CNN’s “International,” CNN’s “Larry King Live,” the Fox News Channel, Huffington Post, CNN.com, theRoot.com, EbonyJet.com and Upscale Magazine.

Johnson, a graduate of the University of Toledo, served as national director of the NAACP’s Youth and College division. He later served as vice president of Russell Simmons’ Hip Hop Summit Action Network.

Johnson further developed a reputation for being a positive force among young adults though his politically conscious television personality “Cousin Jeff” on BET’s Rap City and the Jeff Johnson Chronicles, which he hosted and produced. Currently, serving as CEO of Jeff’s Nation, LLC, Johnson is a trailblazing social entrepreneur.

Johnson is the only U.S. reporter to receive an exclusive post-inauguration interview with Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state and Liberia’s first elected female president. He is also one of only two news correspondents to receive an exclusive interview with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who has not granted interviews with U.S. media outlets for thirteen years.

Johnson is the recipient of the National Association of Black Journalist Salute to Excellence Award for BET’s “Life and Death in Darfur,” Jeff Johnson Reports series.
