On Jan. 12, the Study Abroad Office held a Study Abroad Fair for students to explore what the office has to offer. The Student Center Terrace displayed rows of informational boards about the myriad of summer programs available. In addition, Study Abroad advisors, alumni and program faculty leaders stood by to answer any questions students had. The tables were filled with refreshments and free merchandise, such as pens and notebooks. Plenty of informational pamphlets were handed out as well. Slideshows featuring promotional photos from previous study abroad trips added to the atmosphere and sold the experience.

There is a diverse range of programs being offered, so anybody can find a study abroad trip that suits them. For those who are STEM inclined, there is USA Physics in Europe, USA Biology in Texas and USA Geography in Germany. For those interested in humanities, programs include USA in the UK: Begin in Britain and USA Creative Writing in Scotland and Ireland. There is also USA Business in Singapore, USA Communication and Culture in Italy and USA Global Healthcare in Ecuador.

Faculty leader Dr. Cynthia Torres was in attendance to speak about her program, USA Spanish in Spain. It will feature learning experiences through the culinary world, offering food and wine tasting tours, in order to fully immerse students in the rich history of migration and culture of Madrid.

This spring semester will have events that aim to prepare students for their study-abroad experience, such as planning, packing and budgeting workshops. From 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, there will be a workshop in room 203 of the Student Center to help students secure nationally competitive scholarships, such as the Gilman Scholarship, the Freeman-Asia Scholarship and the Boren Awards. To encourage scholarship application submission, the Study Abroad Office will award students with a scholarship from their office who successfully submit a Gilman scholarship application regardless if they are awarded.

More information can be found on the International Education and Study Abroad website. If interested, Study Abroad staff recommend booking an appointment with an advisor. Walk-in advising appointments are held on Thursdays from 2 – 4 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. – noon in the Office of International Education located in Meisler Hall. The deadline to commit to Maymester programs is Feb. 1, and the deadline to commit to a Summer term program is Feb. 14.
