The Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of South Alabama offers an entry-level, first physical therapy degree that prepares graduates for professional practice. During their time in the program, students develop essential communication skills in addition to professional and manual skills and techniques.
1. Student Outcomes
While in the program, students benefit from significant hands-on physical therapy
clinical practical labs and formal lectures led by faculty with experience in each
clinical practice area, clinical problem-solving activities, clinical research, and
34 weeks of full-time clinical internship supervised by licensed physical therapists.
As a result, graduates from USA’s physical therapy program have historically achieved
an overall pass rate on the National Physical Therapy Exam that is well above the national average.
2. Faculty Mentor Program
Physical therapy students receive support through the department’s faculty mentor program. Each faculty member is assigned a small number of students for personal mentoring.
Students are able to consult with their faculty mentors about course questions and
semesterly performance to help prevent any problems.
3. Career Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are nearly 13,900 openings for physical therapists each year. From 2022-2032,
the outlook for careers as a physical therapist indicates a 15% growth. In the U.S.
News and World Report’s latest ranking of Best Health Care Jobs, physical therapist
is No. 7.
Doctor of Physical Therapy Program
The Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of South Alabama is offered in an eight-semester format, a new class entering each fall semester. Graduates are prepared for careers as physical therapists after completing 32 continuous months of a variety of professional training and educational experiences.
