Dr. Jason Brooks Named Chair of Emergency Medical Services Department

Dr. Jason Brooks has been named chair of the Department of Emergency Medical Services for the Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions

Brooks joined the department as an instructor in 2012 and earned promotion to senior instructor in 2022. He has served as the program director for the EMS certificate program and as program director and academic advisor for the bachelor’s program. 

“Dr. Brooks has been essential to the emergency medical services and professional health sciences programs serving as a faculty member, advisor, program director and leader,” Dr. Susan Gordon-Hickey, dean of the Covey College of Allied Health Professions, said. “He has a strong reputation in our community.” 

"I'm very excited about becoming the chair of an EMS program that is ranked among the top 5 in the country,” Brooks said. “We have made incredible strides in my 12 years with the department, and we will continue work to make USA EMS the flagship program for first responders along the Gulf Coast."


Prior to his work at the University of South Alabama, Brooks worked as a paramedic for various EMS providers including Medstar and North Baldwin EMS. He also served as a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Daphne Fire Department. 

Brooks holds a doctorate degree in education from Walden University, a master’s degree from the American Military University and a bachelor’s degree from Judson College. He is an Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider, Advanced Medical Life Support provider and a Heartsaver CPR instructor. Additionally, he is a member of the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Educators. 

“Dr. Brooks is ideal for this position as he has a strong vision for the department and its programs,” Gordon-Hickey said.
