The University of South Alabama has received the 2020 Alabama Broadcasters Association endowed scholarship of $25,000. The ABA chose South from the eight Alabama universities that offer TV, radio and broadcast journalism programs.
“It is a real honor for our department to have been selected as the recipient of the Alabama Broadcasters Association annual scholarship. This very generous endowment will really help the students in our Broadcast Journalism and Television Production tracks. We are deeply grateful to the broadcast professionals of Alabama for this support and recognition of our program,” said Dr. Richard Ward, chair of the department of communication.
The ABA gift will be matched by the Mitchell-Moulton Scholarship Initiative, creating a $50,000 endowed scholarship. The Mitchell-Moulton Scholarship Initiative was created by philanthropist Abraham A. Mitchell to honor the late USA President Emeritus V. Gordon Moulton.
Alabama Broadcasters Association President Sharon Tinsley said: “A committee of board members representing the Alabama Broadcasters Association and the organization’s education foundation reviewed proposals from several colleges and universities around the state that offer broadcast and journalism degrees. While the University of South Alabama’s program was certainly worthy of being chosen based on its curriculum and degrees offered, the fact that there was a $25,000 matching fund made it an even easier choice. We were excited to know that our gift would immediately be doubled to $50,000.”
The criteria for qualifying for the scholarship include:
- Full-time undergraduate student(s)
- 3.0 GPA or higher or converted GPA equivalent to 3.0
- Junior or senior standing student(s) concentrating in either radio or television studies or broadcast journalism
- Preference given to Alabama residents
