Athletics Council
Purpose
The primary function of the Athletics Council is to advise the President, University Administration and the Department of Athletics on major decisions affecting the administration of the intercollegiate athletics program. Specific duties of the Athletics Council include, but may not be limited to:
- Monitoring the recruitment, scholastic eligibility, admissions and academic progress of student-athletes by receiving regular reports from the applicable subcommittee on these activities from the Department of Athletics, and any other university division as appropriate.
- Monitoring gender equity by receiving reports and responses for information from the applicable subcommittee on these activities from the Department of Athletics, and any other university division as appropriate.
- Monitoring compliance efforts by receiving reports and responses for information from the applicable subcommittee on these activities from the Department of Athletics, and any other university division as appropriate.
- Monitoring academic integrity efforts.
- Evaluating athletic policies and programs to ensure their compatibility with overall aims and mission of the University.
- Performing other functions as requested by the President of the University and/or the Director of Athletics.
Meetings
Athletic Council conducts one standing meeting per semester (October and April).
Committee Structure
The Athletic Council is divided into three subcommittees each with its own Chair. The three subcommittees are Academics, Compliance, and Student-Athlete Well-Being.
Academics Subcommittee - Chair: Dr. Caitlyn Hauff
Meets in July; Reports in October
Purpose: This subcommittee considers issues related to admissions, academic standards, academic support services and academic program scheduling. This subcommittee will monitor the academic progress of student-athletes and the academic integrity of the intercollegiate athletics program. The subcommittee will review and evaluate academic progress, missed class time due to team travel, and the overall academic statuses of student athletes. The subcommittee will annually prepare a data summary to convey the academic trends of student-athletes (i.e. GPA’s, graduation rates, APR, etc.). The subcommittee will review reports generated by the Office Institutional Research to analyze professor/major clustering and student-athlete versus non-student-athlete grade distribution.
Compliance Subcommittee - Chair: Ms. Kristin Dukes
Meets in January; Reports in April
Purpose: This subcommittee ensures that the mission of the athletics program supports the mission and goals of the institution, reviews matters of institutional policy and control, and monitors compliance with rules and regulations. The subcommittee annually reviews rules education efforts, monitoring efforts, violation reporting history, and overall compliance operations to ensure control mechanism are strong and viable.
Well-Being Subcommittee - Chair: Dr. Joe'l Billingsley
Meets in January; Reports in April
Purpose: This committee assures the fair and equitable treatment of women and other minorities, protects the physical and educational welfare of student athletes, and assures that all associated with athletics are committed to the fundamental values of sportsmanship and ethical conduct. Specifically, the subcommittee annually reviews materials related to student-athlete time demands, concussion protocol and catastrophic injury management, Title IX compliance and gender equity, diversity, and harassment.
