Thinking about graduate school? South provides an educational experience for students like no other. Marcee Hinds, a current College of Education and Professional Studies graduate student, was chosen by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History as the Alabama History Teacher of the Year and was named a top 12 finalist for National History Teacher of the Year. She has been teaching history at Baker High School in Mobile for the past 10 years. Hinds recently accepted a position to serve as a 7th grade civics and geography teacher at the new Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies in downtown Mobile.

Hinds was awarded the 2019 James Madison Fellowship for Alabama and the college's Educator Excellence Scholarship, which allowed her to return to South in the fall 2019 to pursue a Master of Education degree.

In 2021, Hinds was honored by Mobile County Public Schools and had her name added to "The Giving Tree" at the MCPSS Central Campus. She has worked professionally with George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, and is a certified Apple Teacher.

Hinds has written curriculum for Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the American Revolution Institute, and MCPSS. For the last three years, Hinds has served as a member of the iCivics Educator Network, which works to advocate for better civics education across the nation. Hinds is civically active in our community as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and serves as a board member for the Historic Mobile Preservation Society.
