Undergraduate Summer Research Program
Program Information
The University of South Alabama Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine is pleased to offer motivated undergraduate students an enriching opportunity to engage in cutting-edge biomedical research through its Undergraduate Summer Research Program. This immersive experience is designed for students majoring in sciences, engineering, or mathematics, providing them with the chance to work alongside distinguished faculty mentors while exploring innovative research in fields such as cardiovascular health, pulmonary biology, and cancer research.
This program is particularly suited for students aspiring to advanced Ph.D. training within the basic medical sciences, offering invaluable hands-on experience in a dynamic research environment. Participants will gain critical investigative skills, exposure to state-of-the-art methodologies, and insight into the research process, helping to lay a strong foundation for future careers in biomedical science and related fields.
The program is structured into two distinct tracks:
- Students interested in cancer research will conduct their training at the Mitchell Cancer Institute, where they will work on projects focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of cancer and novel therapeutic approaches.
- Students interested in other basic science disciplines will train at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine, engaging in research in the basic medical sciences.
Opportunities are available in research laboratories specializing in areas including biochemistry, mitochondrial biology, structural biology, cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology, neuroscience, infectious disease, host defense, bioinformatics and other biomedical areas.
The program requires a full-time summer commitment and is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have completed their freshman, sophomore, or junior year with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
