Internal medicine resident Sana Ozair, M.D., cultivated her interest in oncology by getting involved in research at the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute. Now, having matched in medical oncology at the MCI, she is looking forward to a smooth transition to fellowship training.

“I am excited for all the new responsibilities, research opportunities, strong clinical training and mentorship,” she said. “Oncology is a truly rewarding field that is challenging and constantly evolving.”

Ozair is one of about 35 residents at USA who have matched into subspecialty fellowships after completing their interviews virtually. Some residents are remaining at USA Health, while others are headed to California, Louisiana, Maine and many points in between. Almost all of the matches are conducted by the National Resident Matching Program’s Specialties Matching Service.

Internal medicine chief resident Farheen Surtie, M.D., matched in pulmonary/critical care at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. “I’m nervous but excited about the move,” said Surtie, whose husband, fellow chief John Anaya, M.D., matched in nephrology at Tulane. “Being able to be there with John was a top priority.”

Surtie said she became interested in pulmonary and critical care during medical school. “Pulmonary has a lot of physics to it, and I liked physics as an undergraduate,” she said. “Now my dream is coming true.”
