The Gulf Coast Region

Exploration in the Mobile area began in early 1500’s when Spanish explorers first entered Mobile Bay.  Named after the indigenous Mabila Indian tribe, Mobile has also been strongly influenced by European explorers and settlers as the area has been claimed by Spain, France and England respectively, prior to becoming part of the United States in 1813.  Examples of European influenced architecture can be found in Mobile’s beautiful, oak tree-lined historic neighborhoods as well as various historical buildings in the downtown area. 

Recognized as Alabama’s oldest city, Mobile’s location on the Mobile Bay and proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway has shaped its robust trading and shipping industry.  Mobile also boasts a temperate climate, with outdoor activities to enjoy year round.  Additionally, our Gulf Coast region has a well-earned reputation for gracious hospitality, beautiful white sandy beaches and fresh tasty seafood.  With a population of approximately 200,000, this mid-sized city with a low cost of living offers museums, theatres, gardens, parks, festivals, award-winning golf courses, and much more. 

As a major center of undergraduate, graduate, and professional education for Alabama, the Gulf Coast region, and the southeastern United States, the University of South Alabama is a comprehensive, coeducational, and state-assisted institution.  With the development of several fully online programs, we also serve the education needs of student’s nation-wide.  The University’s mission encompasses the three traditional academic functions of teaching, research, and public service through which it pursues the discovery, preservation, and communication of knowledge.
