Message from the Dean

April and pollen season are winding down here in Mobile; the spring semester is also drawing to a close. We held our annual Scholars Night last week recognizing our scholarship students and the second class of Mitchell College of Business Alumni Fellows. Details of these events will follow in the May issue.

At the Beta Gamma Sigma induction ceremony that evening, Mr. Abraham Mitchell received the 2018 Beta Gamma Sigma Academic Achievement Award. Beta Gamma Sigma is the honor society that recognizes academic excellence in AACSB-accredited business colleges and schools. As part of the award, Mr. Mitchell was asked to prepare comments on the keys to success; the video may be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpaLBRtLD7Q.

As the semester draws to a close, we bid farewell to five of our Mitchell Ambassadors. Joshua Crownover enters law school at the University of Mississippi this fall.  In addition to serving as an Ambassador, Josh served as the President of the Student Government Association and was active in undergraduate research. While at South, Devin Epps was a member of the South Alabama men’s basketball team and earned a reputation as one of the best cooks on campus. He plans to pursue a career in the culinary industry. Ashley Heitling plans to enter graduate school this fall. Originally from Mount Dora, Florida, she captained the South Alabama Cross Country Team and ran track during her years at South. A native of Dauphin Island, Avril McRae begins a career in public accounting this fall. This spring she interned with Wilkins-Miller here in Mobile. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rodin holds the distinction as being the youngest graduate in the history of the Mitchell College. Originally from Pensacola, she plans a career in human resource management. These five students helped the College become who we are. They will be missed.

The College also bids adieu to two of our valued staff. Ms. Cindy Nobles, Supervisor of Academic Advising in our Office of Student Services, retires in May. She has been a valued resource and advisor to countless students and faculty alike. Ms. Cindy Martin, Assistant to the Dean, also leave us in May. She has brought a calming efficiency to the often just short of chaotic activities in the dean’s office. The office and College are a better place because of her effort. We wish both of them well as they enter new chapters in their lives.
