The first annual South Alabama Trumpet Day, held on Saturday, February 6, 2016, was a resounding success! There were over 50 trumpet players, ages 12 to 65 on our campus, plus guest artists Leonard Candelaria, Joe Nibley, Justin Langham, and David Sayers. Along with USA trumpet professor Dr. Peter Wood, they held a full day of activities that were inspiring and educational for all.

The day began with a warm-up session at 8:30 a.m., and other activities included master classes, mass trumpet ensemble rehearsals, exhibits with new trumpets for students to play, and a finale concert that included the USA Trumpet Ensemble, Faculty Trumpet Ensemble, and the Mass Trumpet Ensemble with all workshop participants. The turnout and success of the day exceeded all expectations, and we definitely plan on holding another similar event next year.

Upcoming trumpet-related and brass-related events in the USA Department of Music include a residency with renowned trumpeter/composer Anthony Plog on March 8-9, a Baroque faculty trumpet recital by Dr. Peter Wood at 7:30 p.m. on March 8, the South Alabama Honors Brass Chamber Music Festival on April 8-9, and a performance by the American Brass Quintet at 7:30 p.m. on April 9.
