Robert Holm, Faculty Piano Recital October 2 at Laidlaw (3:00)
Posted on September 27, 2016 by Keith Bohnet
Steinway Artist and USA piano professor Dr. Robert Holm will perform a solo recital
consisting of works by Scarlatti, Haydn, Copland, Gershwin, Tatum and Chopin. The
faculty piano concert will take place in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital
Hall on Sunday, October 2 at 3:00 p.m.
Scarlatti's acrobatic hand-crossing sonata in A major will be followed by Haydn's
Sonata in C, the first to introduce "open pedaling" and a high A into the piano repertoire.
Copland's Passacaglia and Gershwin's jazzy Three Preludes, both from 1922, will be
followed by an attractive transcription of the 1933 version of "Tiger Rag" by Art
Tatum, a piece which elevated him to the forefront of all jazz pianists. The all-Chopin
second half will feature some etudes from his opus 10 collection, Nocturnes in C minor
and F-sharp major, and the evening will conclude with the famous "Heroic" Polonaise,
opus 53.
