Steel Band and World Music Ensemble Spring Concert April 28
Posted on April 24, 2017 by Keith Bohnet

USA's Steel Band and World Music Ensembles will present their joint Spring Concert on Friday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. This annual event is filled with instruments and ensemble performances that will amaze and entertain you!
The USA Steel Band is dedicated to performing significant literature from the steel band repertoire, becoming familiar with percussion instruments and techniques, and learning about the cultures associated with the steel band movement throughout the Caribbean region. The music performed includes those indigenous to the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as transcriptions and adaptations of other popular styles around the world to a steel drum ensemble.
The USA World Music Ensemble is an ensemble that focuses its repertoire on traditional, folkloric music and dance from other cultures. While the focus of the ensemble is musical, cultural contexts relevant to the music studied are inherently stressed, giving the students and the audience a deeper understanding of the music’s meaning and a greater personal enjoyment of the music played. The ensemble is taught mainly through oral tradition. This year the ensemble is proud to host Puerto Rican conguero, Luis Benetti, for their 2017 concert. Selections will include music from the Afro-Cuban folkloric traditions, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Cuba.
Tickets for this Musical Arts Series event will be sold at the door only. Admission is $8 general and $5 for USA faculty & staff, USA students, youths under 18 and all senior citizens (cash or check only). Persons needing more information about this event or in need of special accommodation may call (251) 460-7116 or (251) 460-6136.
