The University of South Alabama Celtic Crúe, under the direction of Dr. Andra Bohnet, will present a concert on Tuesday, July 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall as a preview of their upcoming performance in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the 45th Annual Convention of the National Flute Association. This ensemble was selected by a competitive peer review process to appear at this internationally attended event!

Celtic Crúe's repertoire features unique arrangements of Celtic music performed on simple system Irish style flutes, whistles, bodhran and Celtic harp. With an emphasis on traditional performance practice, students learn the tunes and appropriate ornamentation aurally. The tunes are then enhanced in Bohnet’s unique arrangements with rhythmic and harmonic accents that result in toe-tapping jigs and reels and achingly beautiful slow airs. This program also features some Scandinavian selections in homage to the strong cultural roots of this tradition in Minnesota. The USA Celtic Crúe is the only ensemble at the collegiate level in the United States that combines traditional instruments and culturally appropriate instrumental techniques with a flute choir like sensibility.

Members of the ensemble are USA Flute studio students Nicole Carrion, Bayleigh Cook, Rebecca Reinhardt, Emily Denison, Stephen Howze, Alicia Daniels, Hanna Ardrey and Ashley Osburn, as well as faculty member and assistant director Travis Jones.

Admission to this Department of Music concert is free and open to the public. Persons needing more information about this event or in need of special accommodation may call (251) 460-7116 or (251) 460-6136, or go online at www.southalabama.edu/music and click on "events."
