Dr. Nairam Simoes and Dr. Kristen Leitterman will present a Guest Faculty Trumpet and Oboe Recital on Monday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. Both artists are faculty guests from Arkansas State University.

Tickets for this Department of Music event will be sold at the door only. Admission is $8 general and $5 for USA faculty & staff, USA students, youths under 18 and all senior citizens (cash or card accepted). Musical Arts Series season passes will of course be honored for admission to this event. ARTIST BIOS

Originally hailing from Brazil, Dr. Nairam Simoes has established himself as an award-winning trumpet artist and currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Arkansas State University. His diverse international career spans performance, music education, and clinician roles. Cited by the InternationalTrumpet Guild (ITG) for his “virtuosity and musicality,” Simoes has collaborated with distinguished ensembles, including the Arkansas Symphony, Memphis Symphony, and Fountain City Brass Band.

Simoes’s recorded work, specifically the album “Braziliana,” released under the Fundamental Sounds label, has garnered international acclaim, earning a silver medal in the Global Music Awards. Within the academic realm, he assumes the role of editor for the Orchestral Spotlight column in the International Trumpet Guild Journal, contributing numerous interviews with prominent orchestral trumpet players.

At Arkansas State University, Dr. Simoes oversees a thriving trumpet program, guiding students to acceptance in premier graduate programs and successful careers in performance and music education across various educational levels. His trumpet ensembles have achieved distinction, being acknowledged as one of the top student chamber ensembles globally by the ITG.

Simoes holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music (M.M.) degree from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degree from the University of Memphis. He proudly aligns with esteemed affiliations such as S.E. Shires, Torpedo Bags, Robinson’s Remedies, and Fundamental Sounds. Dr. Kristin Leitterman, a solo artist of oboe and voice, defies modern convention, bringing exciting and unusual programs to audiences. She has performed compositions, employing both oboe and voice, which she commissioned from Michael-Thomas Foumai, Jason Coleman, Whitney George, and Lyle Davidson in major concert venues around the world, taking her to Spain, Brazil, and Canada, as well as throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall and Jordan Hall.

As assistant professor of oboe at Arkansas State University, Dr. Leitterman teaches oboe, bassoon, and double reed techniques; coaches chamber ensembles; and acts as the woodwind area coordinator. For many years she has served as director of the Lucarelli Oboe Master Class, a weeklong immersive oboe workshop founded by Humbert Lucarelli. As a guest artist, she has presented masterclasses at many institutions, including Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and the Hartt School.

Leitterman has presented her research on the life and works of composers Mary Chandler and Marie de Grandval, as well as the musical autograph album of oboist and composer Gustave Vogt, at The Juilliard School, the Music by Women Festival, and at conferences of the International Double Reed Society and the Associação Brasileira de Palhetas Duplas in Brazil.

Leitterman holds degrees from the City University of New York’s Graduate Center, the Hartt School, New England Conservatory, and the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory. Besides her long association with Humbert Lucarelli, her teachers include Mark McEwen, Barbara Bishop, and Amy Burton (voice).
