Opportunities for Support

Gifts from alumni, employees, friends and business partners are vital to the support and success of our computing students, faculty and programs. Your gift could have a direct and lasting impact on scholarship opportunities for students, recruitment of faculty, or funding for research programs.

Scholarships and Endowments

Established in 1980, USA’s School of Computing continues to provide top quality, innovative educational programs and research opportunities in our state-of-the-art facilities in Shelby Hall. Although our mission is to connect classroom learning with current technology issues and to encourage our students to pursue their interests, many of our students face financial hardships which may impact their academic pursuits. With increased scholarship support, we can better recruit and retain highly motivated students and provide them with opportunities to achieve their educational goals.

Supporting scholarships or creating scholarships is a chance to invest in a University of South Alabama student and the future of the technology industry. There are a variety of options available to donors who wish to support scholarships for students. A one-time gift can be given or an endowment can be created to ensure your gift continues to support the School in perpetuity. A minimum gift of $10,000 will establish a named endowed scholarship fund. Such a gift may be made through payments extended over a period of time.

Mitchell-Moulton Scholarship Initiative

A dollar-for-dollar match for undergraduate endowed scholarships is made possible by a matching challenge. At the University’s 50th anniversary celebration, Abraham Mitchell announced the Mitchell-Moulton Scholarship Initiative as a $25 million matching challenge to honor late President Emeritus V. Gordon Moulton. This initiative serves as an invitation to University alumni, friends, and community partners to have a lasting impact on USA and its students. As a result, USA's endowed undergraduate funds will be permanently strengthened by $50 million. The impact of this unprecedented growth will ensure that access to quality academic programs stays affordable and attainable.

Professorships and Endowed Chairs

Support to create professorships and endowed chair positions is another way in which a donor can impact the School of Computing. Such endowments support and enhance the ability of the School to recruit renowned faculty to teach, conduct research, serve the University, and engage with business and industry partners. Named professorships and chairs are both an honor to the named holder of the appointment as well as an enduring tribute to the donor.

Room and Building Naming in Shelby Hall

In 2012, USA’s School of Computing moved to Shelby Hall - a 155,000 square foot building which serves as a cornerstone for the campus. This state-of-the-art facility offers classroom and laboratory space, multimedia classrooms, faculty offices, and conference rooms. There are several gift opportunities to name the rooms in Shelby Hall. Plaques outside each room pay tribute to donors and leave a lasting legacy.

Center for Forensics, Information Technology, and Security (CFITS) giving opportunities

Our CFITS outreach center cultivates relationships with business and industry partners to create collaboration opportunities and internships for our students. In addition, our K-12 partner school program is designed to introduce computing at an early age and foster the next generation of students to pursue careers in computing. Opportunities for support of the CFITS program include:

• Sponsoring our partner schools for “Hands-On Learning Lab Activities” (HOLLA) where whole grade STEM learning activities are offered in the K-12 STEM Learning Lab in Shelby Hall.
• Offering funding for equipment, facilities, and instructional support to expand the K-12 STEM partner school initiative into other local communities.
• Funding naming opportunities for the CFITS program, the K-12 STEM Lab, and an endowed directorship.
• Supporting outreach through funding for the Wednesday cyber security lecture series, research projects, and graduate assistantships.
• Volunteering to assist with computer lab/classroom instruction.
