Posted on February 3, 2023
Acclaimed fiction author Dionne Irving will be at the Student Center Terrace on Thursday, Feb. 9., from 4 p.m. to 5p.m. to read from her latest short story collection, “The Islands.” This free event is sponsored by the University of South Alabama Stokes Center for Creative Writing.
Following the reading, there will be a book signing and a reception.
The short story collection explores colonialism, immigration, sexual discrimination and class in the lives of Jamaican women. The women are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants, who emigrate to London, Panama, France, Jamaica and Florida.
“We are so honored to have Dionne Irving visit classes not only at South but also at the Alabama School of Math and Science as part of our Writers in the Schools Program,” said Dr. Charlotte Pence, director of the Stokes Center for Creative Writing.
“The Islands,” has received accolades including a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice award.
