The University of South Alabama has named Nick Lawkis vice president for governmental relations. He has served as the office’s executive director since May 2019.
Lawkis will continue to serve as a University liaison with local, state and federal governments and agencies, including coordinating efforts to secure the University’s share of the state’s nearly $9 billion education budget.
“Nick Lawkis is one of the most respected governmental relations professionals in Alabama,” said USA President Jo Bonner. “He has elevated South’s profile both in Montgomery and Washington D.C. and has earned this promotion with his hard work and dedication to our University.”
Under his leadership, Lawkis has led efforts to secure nearly $400 million in funding for the University and USA Health.
“Our successes have truly been a collaborative effort by many and especially because of our relationships with our elected and government officials,” Lawkis said. “I am humbled by the recognition and extremely grateful to President Bonner and Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Andi Kent for this opportunity, and I look forward to continuing to advance the vision and mission of the Flagship of the Gulf Coast.”
Prior to his work in governmental relations, Lawkis served in roles in both USA’s Office of Student Affairs and Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
Lawkis holds two degrees from South, an undergraduate degree in business administration and a master's in public administration.
He has been named to Mobile Bay magazine’s 40 Under 40 and serves on several internal and external committees and boards.
Lawkis is married to Kim Lawkis, who serves as president of USA’s National Alumni Association and the Chief Operating Officer for Feeding Alabama. They have two children and live in Mobile.
