Posted on February 12, 2018
The University of South Alabama will launch the USA Gulf Coast Internship Academy in May 2018 to facilitate the placement of students from a variety of fields in internships across south Baldwin County. Internship opportunities include education, sports management, event planning, business, criminal justice, social work, nonprofit management, and hospitality and tourism.
Through participation in the academy, USA students will receive assistance in internship placement, leadership development and housing. In addition, employers will receive training and resources related to the recruitment, support and supervision of interns.
“This is an excellent opportunity for our students in almost any major to gain pre-professional experience in one of the most beautiful locations in the state,” said Dr. Jenny Manders, coordinator of the internship academy. Internship opportunities exist in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Foley. University housing will be available in Gulf Shores to those students selected to participate for the semester of their internships.
Participation in the academy will initially be offered to USA students, but plans for expansion include acceptance of students from other universities in the United States and around the globe. Partners in the academy include the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce and the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber, in addition to businesses and community organizations in the south Baldwin area.
“The Internship Academy will advance the University’s priority of community engagement and will be responsive to the needs of our community partners, our academic units and, most important, our students,” said Dr. David Johnson, USA provost and senior vice president for academic affairs “It will fill a real need in south Baldwin County.”
