Alabama Senate, House Approve Resolution Supporting USA Health

The Alabama Senate and House of Representatives have approved a joint resolution praising the University of South Alabama Health system’s mission of education, research and clinical care as well as highlighting some top national rankings recently received by USA Health.
The local delegation to the Alabama Legislature gathered recently to present the resolution to USA President Tony Waldrop and top officials from USA and USA Health.
“We appreciate the recognition of USA and USA Health by our elected officials,” Dr. Waldrop said. “They are great advocates for our region, and they understand our role as the region’s only academic medical center.”
USA Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the College of Medicine Dr. John Marymont said that the legislative support makes a difference to USA students, researchers and clinicians.
“As we fulfill our tripartite mission of education, research and clinical care, our elected officials are advocating on our behalf,” he said. “It’s gratifying to know they understand and support our mission as the only academic medical center in this region and its importance to the state of Alabama.”
USA Health Chief Executive Officer Owen Bailey said the resolution would be meaningful to the clinical care providers who offer high-level, unique services, such as the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, burn center, high-risk obstetrics, neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit.
“Our physicians, advanced care providers, nurses, therapists and staff work diligently every day to provide the best and most compassionate care to our patients,” Bailey said. “We are proud to have such wonderful healthcare partners in our region, as well as the support and leadership of our legislative delegation. Their partnership and support are so very much appreciated.
The full text of the resolution mentions USA’s unique services, including one of two universities statewide to educate physicians, as well as the region’s only academic cancer center at USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. It also highlights several recent national distinctions gained by USA College of Medicine, USA Medical Center’s Level 1 Trauma Center and the Arnold Luterman Regional Burn Center, among others.
