Posted on August 23, 2019
Fall semester has begun at the University of South Alabama, and plans are being finalized for the first Black Alumni Weekend to be held Sept 6-7.
The South Alabama Alumni Association and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs invite alumni and the University community to celebrate the legacy of diversity at South Alabama. This event, with the theme, “Come Back, Give Back,” will be a time for black alumni to reconnect and fellowship with each other, mentor current students and create new memories. Assisting Jarmora Valrie, director of Multicultural Student Affairs, is Chelsia Douglas, BA ‘18 and USA master of public administration student and coordinator of the first South Alabama Black Alumni Weekend.
“The South Alabama planning effort is underway, and we are ready to welcome our black alumni home,” Douglas said. “We are excited that our black alumni will be focusing on University engagement, networking with other alumni and providing mentoring and financial support through scholarship opportunities for current students. ”
The deadline to register for the event has been extended to Sept. 3. There will also be onsite registration the first day of the reunion on Sept. 6. The Black Alumni Society is supported by the University’s National Alumni Association.
The planning of the signature weekend is also receiving support from the new Black Alumni Society Board of Directors and Steering Committee. Clarksdale, Miss., Judge Carlos Moore, BA ’99, president of the USA Black Alumni Society and managing partner of The Cochran Firm-Grenada, Miss., said the Black Alumni Weekend will be a catalyst for great things to come.
“The overall purpose of the Black Alumni Weekend is to celebrate the culture and legacy of black alumni. We also plan to establish a scholarship that will support current and future black students of South Alabama,” Moore explained. “This will be an optimal time to reconnect with old friends and classmates, become acquainted with current students, faculty, staff, and administrators, and to just go down memory lane while applauding the many University achievements and advancements since our days on the yard. It will really be a family reunion of sorts. We are planning several fun and informative events. We invite all alumni to come out and celebrate with us.”
