South Goes Big for Local Teachers

The University of South Alabama College of Education and Professional Studies and South Alabama Athletics partnered with the Football Playoff Foundation to honor and celebrate teachers in Mobile and Baldwin counties during the 2024 Extra Yard for Teachers Week.
Extra Yard for Teachers is a nationwide celebration of educators. South Alabama’s celebration kicked off on Thursday, Sept. 12, as teachers and college faculty gathered to watch the Jaguar football team take on Northwestern State University at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
Not only were teachers given discount tickets for attending the game, but 27 of them were selected to have their Amazon classroom wish lists fulfilled. During the game, two $500 winners were selected: LaTara Lofton from Florence Howard Elementary School and Carmenita Pharr from Williamson High School. After the game, 25 additional teachers were awarded $200 to fulfill their Amazon wish lists.
“As a former math teacher, I am keenly aware of the crucial role that teachers play in shaping students’ lives,” said Dr. Angela Barlow, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies at South. “Teachers invest considerable time and effort in supporting students’ personal growth. Extra Yard for Teachers is an opportunity to lift up these professionals and honor them for the phenomenal work they do. After all, teachers make all other professions possible.”
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Extra Yard for Teachers Big Reveal Day occurred at W. H. Leinkauf Elementary School in Mobile, where 550 students and 60 faculty and staff members received USA Jag swag, school supplies and a $1,000 gift certificate from DonorsChoose.org. In addition, Madeline Lester Price, a first-grade teacher at Leinkauf and a USA College of Education and Professional Studies alumna, received a $100 gift certificate from DonorsChoose.org. Principal Hope Belle-Payne accepted the “big check,” while faculty and staff enjoyed fanfare provided by Jaguar cheerleaders, SouthPaw, Miss Pawla, football players and members of the Jaguar Marching Band.
“Our teachers and students in this great community need our support,” said South Athletic Director Dr. Joel Erdmann. “And we are excited to partner and make this a special time of giving to the many dedicated teachers.”
