The University of South Alabama Black Alumni Society is accepting nominations for its inaugural alumni awards, which will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2020 on USA’s campus. Nominations will be accepted through December 18, 2019.

The Black Alumni Society Awards were created to honor and recognize the accolades and achievements of the University’s black alumni. Proceeds from the Black Alumni Society Awards will benefit scholarships and emergency assistance funds through the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

Attorney Carlos Moore, a 1999 South graduate, serves as the society’s board president. "I am honored to lead the USA Black Alumni Society board as we work to create the first awards that specifically highlight the outstanding and illustrious black alumni at South Alabama,” said Moore. “This is an important time in the history of our University, and with the support of the USA National Alumni Association, we are excited to recognize black alumni for exceptional service and contributions to South Alabama and the community.”

Two awards will be given during the event. The Trailblazer Outstanding Achievement Award honors two black alumni who have served on the USA Board of Trustees, Student Government Association, Black Student Union or as USA faculty and staff. This award honors outstanding achievement in their careers or professions.

The Hall of Fame Achievement Award will honor three dedicated black alumni who have engaged in community service and made major contributions to their hometown communities or current cities of residence.

Herman Thomas serves as vice president of the Black Alumni Society board of directors. “The funds raised from the gala will be used to award scholarships and to offer emergency assistance to minority students at USA,” said Thomas. “The emergency assistance will ensure that students do not have to put their education on hold due to unforeseen emergencies.”

Tickets for the event will be available in January. For more information, visit southalabama.edu/alumni.
