Gov. Robert Bentley has appointed a new member to the University of South Alabama Board of Trustees.
The governor’s appointment is Alexis Atkins, vice president of human resources/principal in co-ownership of Budweiser Busch Distributing, Inc., of Mobile. Atkins will represent Mobile County in the position vacated by William S. “Sandy” Stimpson of Mobile, mayor of the city of Mobile, who was appointed in 2014. Atkins’ term will expire on Sept. 30, 2019.
“I appreciate and support Gov. Bentley's appointment of Alexis Atkins to the University of South Alabama Board of Trustees,” said Kenneth O. Simon, chair pro tempore of the Board of Trustees. “She has a long history of unwavering, enthusiastic support for the University. As an alumna, she also brings the perspective of a former student who will now help guide our University in the future.”
Atkins is a 1997 graduate of the University of South Alabama with a major in human resources. A dedicated, quality-driven human resource management professional, she combines a strong personal work ethic, a high level of leadership and initiative, and great team building and problem-solving skills.
At Budweiser Busch Distributing, Atkins provides comprehensive management of human resources for the beverage distributor, ensures compliance and enforcement of all state and federal mandates regarding employment for an organization with personnel levels ranging from 150-200 employees in a multi-location environment, and is responsible for policy development and administration, risk management, and administration of employee records and benefits, including contract negotiations.
Atkins directs and serves as administrator for the company’s financial benefit programs as well as all insurance plans and programs, ensures and certifies a drug-free workplace in accordance with OSHA and state rules and regulations, and administers all aspects of the workers compensation program. She also leads the company’s numerous activities and programs that benefit the region’s service and benevolent organizations.
Atkins is a member of the Jaguar Athletic Fund board, the USA Mitchell College of Business board of advisors, and Feeding the Gulf Coast (formerly the Bay Area Food Bank), of which she is the past chairman. Atkins is also past president of the University of South Alabama National Alumni Association and Executive Women International.
The University of South Alabama Board of Trustees has 16 members, including the governor, who serves in an ex officio capacity.
