Education and Travel: The Study Abroad Fall Fair

On Wednesday, Sept. 25 the Study Abroad Fall Fair will take place in the Student Center Lobby from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Hosted by the Office of Internal Education, the fair provides a wealth of information for students seeking available opportunities for studying abroad or for those simply interested in what the fair has to offer.
Jan Dominique-Santos, Education Abroad Advisor in charge of the fair, took time to elaborate on some of the specifics of the event.
“We usually host 2-3 Study Abroad Fairs throughout the academic year with the September Fall Fair being the biggest as it showcases all our programs, including faculty-led summer and winter programs, semester exchanges and everything in between,” Dominique-Santos explained“ A representative from each program type will be available to give more in-depth information about his or her trip, locations, prices, and available scholarships.”
One of these representatives is Ashley Buffington, a student ambassador for Study Abroad., “We will have the other Student Ambassadors and myself there throughout the day so that students can talk to people who have studied abroad in the past,” said Buffington.
It can be overwhelming going over the processes involved with studying abroad, but the fair ensures that students can easily discover opportunities that await them.
“Many students are hesitant to study abroad as they may feel like it’s not for them or they will not be able to afford it,” said Dominique-Santos. “Some may just not know where to start.”
Buffington related that in her experience, most students who learn more about studying abroad at past events generally express greater interest afterward.
The fair will also provide refreshments and some interactive events for students to loosen up and get acquainted with one another.
“One thing that we have going on is the scavenger hunt!” said Buffington. “It’s a really fun event and I cannot wait for people to get the chance to play it. This fair is not only great for recruiting, but it also is an all-around good time. As far as I’m concerned you can never go wrong with free food and a scavenger hunt!”
For those interested in attending this event, the faculty of the Study Abroad Fall Fair anticipate a great turnout for Wednesday and expressed their fondness of the event in general.
“We are looking forward to having this Fair because our office, with the help of our International Education Ambassadors (a group of Study Abroad Alumni) and faculty/staff, has been hard at work spreading the word about Study Abroad through classroom presentations, tabling and advising sessions, as well as scholarship workshops!” said Dominique-Santos.
“What appeals most to me about this event is the opportunity to talk about my experiences Studying Abroad!” said Buffington. “I cannot explain how thrilled I am to be able to talk to so many people about the once-in-a-lifetime experience they can have with Studying Abroad.”
