Top Prof

The Top Prof dinner was held on October 30, 2023. This celebration is held annually by South Alabama’s Mortar Board chapter with the goal of showing the gratitude members have for professors who have shaped their academic careers. Each member invited a professor to honor at this dinner and recorded a short clip explaining the impact that this professor has had on them. From the members of the Sally Steadman Azalea Chapter of Mortar Board, we sincerely thank those who have aided us in our undergraduate journey.  Video

Retreat

Mortar Board members reconvened after the summer break at their annual retreat on September 10, 2023. This year, the retreat was held at USA’s Shelby Hall. Here, officers gave a short presentation outlining goals for the academic year, and members divided into committees for the year: Scholarship, Service, Membership, Top Prof, Alumni Relations, Tip of the Cap, and Engagement. These committees allow each member of Mortar Board to contribute to the success of the chapter.

Friendsgiving

Mortar Board partnered with Alpha Epsilon Delta and the Indian Student Association to host Friendsgiving in the Student Center Ballroom on November 16, 2023. Our chapter of Mortar Board is diverse, both in academic pathways and in culture. Two organizations that are influential in the lives of many current Mortar Board members at USA are AED and ISA. This Thanksgiving celebration had quite the turnout of over 100 students, all of which enjoyed the potluck!

Meetings

This year, the Mortar Board executive board set a goal of incorporating interactive activities for meeting credits! One such activity was our Mortar Board spin class at the USA Campus Recreation Center. This was a fun way for our members to get to know each other better and get a workout in! Another interactive meeting was reading to children at the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama.

Reading is Leading

“Reading is Leading" is an initiative of Mortar Board at the national level. This initiative centers around encouraging literacy and reading in adolescents. This year, the chapter collected books to donate to the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama.
